Australia Narrows Legal Migration
The United States isn't the only nation looking to restrict legal migration. Australia is also looking to tighten its immigration pipeline, the BBC reports.
Key changes include:
- Foreign students (other than Phd students) will no longer be able to bring their families within them while studying in Australia.
- Foreign students completing one program of study can remain in Australia only if undertaking a more advanced degree (e.g. a Masters after a B.A.).
- The government will cap the number of 12-month working-holiday visas allowed to extend for a second year (set at 45,000 down from 57,000) and will drastically reduce the number allowed to extend for a third year (set at 5,000 down from 31,000).
Australia's goal is to reduce net overseas migration from 292,100 (March 2025-February 2026) to 225,000 by 2028.
