Barack Obama honors Twin Cities' response to ICE surge
Former President Barack Obama has been in the news lots lately. Doesn't it seem like a long time ago when he was President? His dignified and thoughtful tone was a pleasing change of pace.
President Obama was committed to immigration enforcement but not in the way that President Trump is.
Yesterday, during the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, President Obama praised the actions of the "ordinary people in the Twin Cities" during the immigration surge earlier in 2026. He emphasized unity in America. "We want to find a way to turn towards each other again, not further away," Obama said.
He then cited the bravery of Minnesotans:
"And those ordinary people in the Twin Cities who braved frigid temperatures, risked their own safety, standing shoulder to shoulder to look out for their neighbors and sometimes look out for strangers because they knew that was the right thing to do."
In contrast, the Trump administration is indicting protesters.
