BREAKING: Supreme Court Revives DHS Voter Citizenship Database
Katie Buehler and Jeff Overley for Law 360 reports that the Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to reinstate the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's upgraded citizenship verification database before the midterm elections.
In a order, the justices granted the administration's emergency request to stay a federal judge's order that set aside upgrades DHS and the Social Security Administration made to a database called Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE. Government agencies can use SAVE to check a person's immigration or citizenship status.
"Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, dissented Friday and accused the majority of acting hastily. Justice Jackson noted that lower courts handled `months of litigation' and sided with challengers, but that the Supreme Court majority — `without full briefing or oral argument' — ruled the opposite way . . . , only weeks after the government sought a stay."
