The review found that ICE and its contractors delayed care repeatedly, misdiagnosed critical medical conditions, and failed to treat numerous individuals whose lives could have been saved with better medical care.
Doctors identified 17 cases in which multiple doctors said that a person experienced delayed or missed medical care that could have saved their life.
The article finds that "people . . . have died in ICE custody since President Donald Trump returned to office on Jan. 20, 2025, and launched an aggressive immigration crackdown. Last year’s death toll of people in ICE custody — 33 — was the highest since the agency’s creation in 2003, federal records show."
