Eswatini is Latest African Nation to Receive US Deportees
Eswatini is the latest African nation to become a third-country deportation receptacle--joining South Sudan, Rwanda, and Ghana. A total of 10 migrants arrived in Eswatini earlier today. They are being held in one of the country's correctional facilities.
Now, I'm not gonna lie. I had to look up where Eswatini is. I was pleased to learn that it's one of those countries that has changed its name over time – up until April 2018, it was known as Swaziland, which, I'd heard of but still wouldn't have been able to point to on a map. For anyone out there is as geographically illiterate as myself, Eswatini is a landlocked country bordered mostly by South Africa but also Mozambique.
ABC reports that two of today's 10 deportees are citizens of Vietnam. They join four other men who were sent to Eswatini in July. Hailing from Cuba, Laos, Vietnam and Yemen, those earlier deportees, ABC reports, "have been held in the country's maximum-security Matsapha prison without charge" and without access to counsel.
