A new Telemundo investigation reveals that bad actors have been increasingly targeting migrants by pretending to be immigration enforcement agents. (The link will click you through to an NBC report on the investigation--NBC and Telemundo are both owned by NBCUniversal, which in turn is owned by Comcast.)

Telemundo uncovered "at least 31 cases in 2025 alone — a sharp increase compared to an average of 5.3 incidents per year in the previous decade.... 84% involved individuals who claimed to be ICE agents. Others identified themselves as officers from Border Patrol or the Department of Homeland Security."

Not only have such incidents increased in number, they've also increased in violence, with reports of robberies, intimidation, physical assaults, and rape.

This is hardly surprising. Consider the arrest of Rumeysa Ozturk, which received national attention. She was stopped and handcuffed by men who were masked and in plain clothes and who took her away in an unmarked car.

ICE agents do not have a uniform. They are not required to wear a badge with their name on it or otherwise disclose their name. They wear masks, sunglasses, and hats to obscure their identities.

How exactly are migrants (or anyone present for an encounter) supposed to know if the actors are who they say they are?
