Federal prosecutors move to dismiss charges against Chicago woman shot by Border Patrol
The Trump administration's immigration enforcement operations in Chicago have led to great controversy and resistance. NBC News reports that federal prosecutors yesterday moved to dismiss charges against a woman who was shot by a Border Patrol agent multiple times after allegedly using her car to assault and impede federal law enforcement officers.
The motion to dismiss comes after it was revealed that the "Customs and Border Protection agent who shot Martinez multiple times had bragged about it in messages to other officers." The officer in a message in a group Signal chat with other agents, stated: “I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys.” In another message, the shooter sent a news article about the event followed by the message: “Read it. 5 shots, 7 holes.” The officer later told an attorney for the shooting victim what he meant by those messages: “I’m a firearms instructor and I take pride in my shooting skills.”
Given the evidence that would come out in any prosecution, it seems evident why the U.S. government would dismiss the case.
