Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Signs Slate of Legislation Protecting Immigrants

Today Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a new slate of laws to give important protections to residents from federal immigration operations.

The new protective legislation includes requiring hospitals and schools to protect immigration status information, preventing immigration enforcement from taking place outside courthouses, and enabling civil lawsuits against unlawful immigration actions.

CBS News Chicago broadcast live a powerful speech by Governor Pritzker announcing the new bill, calling it an "expansion of new protections for the People of Illinois." He said that the set of laws give "new protective tools" that are "a symbol of our new shared action against those terrorizing our community."

He also offered a shout out to thank community members, service providers, and "the immigration lawyers who have been counseling our families."
