The Vatican's "Migration Chief"
I stumbled across an interesting story from the National Catholic Reporter, reporting on the work of Cardinal Fabio Baggio, undersecretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. NCR identified Cardinal Baggio as the Vatican's "migration chief," a man "charged with overseeing the Vatican's study and response of the global migratory phenomena."
First of all, cool. I had no idea that the Vatican had a migration chief. Love that.
I was also excited to learn that Cardinal Baggio is a Scalabrinian missionary. In case you're unaware, Scalabrinian missionaries are known for their work with migrants. They're behind the casas del migrante in Tijuana, Nuevo Laredo, Tapachula, Guatemala, Tecún Umán, El Salvador and Guadalajara—as well as similar shelters in other countries around the world. Scalabrinians are a rad crew.
The NCR article includes a long interview with Cardinal Baggio, where he says some pretty great stuff about expanding legal pathways for migration and proper treatment of irregular migrants.
