WIRED magazine: How to Film ICE
WIRED magazine has a terrific new article on How to Film ICE. The article begins with caution, quoting the cofounder of the Freedom of Press Foundation Trevor Timm, who states: "Unfortunately, there is no way to film ‘safely’ right now—I think everybody may be taking a risk because of how aggressive and brazen and outright illegal ICE’s conduct has been..." But, the article notes, there are ways to be safe-r.
Here are the highlights:
(1) Use a burner phone. Disable biometrics like Face ID and implement a password login.
(2) Record in landscape not portrait mode. Film for as long as you can and with as much of the scene/surroundings as you can. Focus on the ICE agents (badges, clothing, license plates). "The aim of documenting ICE is to create accountability, not to intervene in their operation."
(3) Think before you post--are bystanders and others identifiable in the footage? Can you blur their faces/identities? Consider sharing the footage directly with media outlets or the ACLU. Backup your footage.
