AG Memo on Implementing English as the Official Language
Attorney General Todd Blanche has issued a new memo providing Guidance on Implementing English as the Official Language consistent with President Trump's March 6, 2025 executive order on the topic.
The memo provides that: "agencies should conduct official business, communicate with the public, develop forms and publications, administer programs, and provide services solely in English-unless, as explained further below, multilingual assistance is required by law or necessary to accomplish an agency's mission."
"Agencies should strive to operate solely in English," Blanche writes. He urges federal agencies to follow the lead of the Department of Homeland Security in "removing materials from their website that were previously provided in languages other than English."
"Agencies should... only provide multilingual assistance to the extent that it is legally required." Among the instances when "multilingual assistance may be necessary" is "immigration enforcement activities."
Finally, when "multilingual assistance is legally required or necessary to accomplish the agency's mission, an agency should select the least burdensome and most cost-effective method available." That might mean using "superintelligence and machine translation programs."
